Whygo2 Shanghai?
Letsgo2 employees have travelled extensively to the destinations we feature. Here are the five main reasons they would consider a visit to Shanghai.
Shopping
Known as "the Oriental Paris", Shanghai is well known among the Chinese as the place to shop, and you will notice how trendy the people dress. For those of you with modern and fashionable tastes, the main shopping areas are Nanjing Road, Huaihai Road and Xujiahui Shopping Centre. Those of you simply looking for a momento of the trip; Xujiahui Shopping Centre, Yuyuan Shopping City and Jiali Sleepless City are popular. The shops around Yu Garden are convenient for traditional Chinese gifts, and while visiting these and the markets, such as Xiangyang market, never accept the first price - bargaining is part of the culture in Shanghai.
Eating Out
Shanghai cuisine is a blend of the most appealing aspects of the main cuisines within China, whilst also adopting the best aspects of foreign cuisine. The dazzling array of food that can be found in the city include Beijing, Yangzhou, Sichuan and Guangzhou delights. You can enjoy the best food from home and abroad at any time.
Nightlife
Along the popular Nanjing Road, most of the shops close at 10pm, so you can come here to pick up a last minute bargain or enjoy a delicious meal. As soon as the shops close, the tea houses and bars are already open! The tea houses are actually open all day - the perfect venue to chat with friends. Live entertainment is also a favourite when night falls, along with the nightclubs and bars. Xin Tian Di is probably the safest area to go in the evening and offers the most choice. The buildings are modern and the open-air bars add to the enjoyment. Hengshan Road is by far the most bustling area in the evening, where the bars sit side by side. If you are looking for a more scenic way to spend your evening, take a cruise along the Huangpu River and take in the magical site of the Bund.
Cultural Attractions
Shanghai, meaning "City on the Sea", is a cosmopolitan city with both modern and traditional Chinese features. The city is divided into two sections, and you will be amazed at its mixture of colonial beauty and neon-lit skyscrapers. Architectural temples, such as the Jade Buddha Temple, are a must-see, and are mainly centered upon People's Square and along the Huangoy River. You can also take in the Bund, the Pearl TV Tower, the Jinmao Tower and the Yu Gardens. Additionally, the Shanghai Museum and the old streets and lanes are worth a visit too.
Festivals and Celebrations
There are many festivals and celebrations in Shanghai. The biggest event is the Chinese New Year, which is in the Spring, and many Temples have large celebrations involving dragon and lion dances. A lovely time to visit is during the Lantern Festival, where buildings are decorated with coloured lanterns. The Shanghai Beer Festival is at the end of July and at the end of September is the Moon Festival; the time to eat moon cakes! Many cultural programs take place in late September when the Shanghai Tourism Festival starts. Flower festivals are also often held in Shanghai, among which Nanhui Peach Blossom Festival, Shanghai International Flower Festival and Shanghai Osmanthus Festival are the most famous. At the end of the year, the Annual Arts Festival takes place. Whatever time of the year you visit, there is bound to be an event or festival taking place in Shanghai.
